Bacchus Marsh Golf Club

Bacchus Marsh Golf Club was formed at a meeting in the Mechanics’ Institute on 23 April 1907, which makes it one of the oldest clubs in regional Victoria. The first course was on the Millbank property beside the Lerderderg River; by the 1930s the club had moved to the Bacchus Marsh racecourse, closer to the growing township.

The present course, on Links Road at Darley, opened in March 1974. It is a par 72 over 6,042 metres, gently undulating, looking down the Lerderderg valley.

What it asks of you

Six thousand metres to a par 72 is a full-length country course, and the Victorian inland conditions do the rest. The ground is firm through summer, which adds run, and the gentle undulation means the run is rarely straight.

The valley views are pleasant and also a hazard of a sort: on a course with long sight lines it is easy to misjudge distance, because there is nothing at the green to give you scale.

Three sites in one club’s history is unusual and tells you something about the town. Each move followed the population rather than the golf, which is how country clubs survive.

The club is on Links Road at Darley, just north of Bacchus Marsh, about fifty minutes west of Melbourne and half an hour from Ballarat.

The course plays all year. September to May gives the best of it. Tee times are booked in advance.
