Your first club competition, start to signed card

GolfLink, entry, tees, marking a card, four rules situations, and the water and hat that summer golf demands.

Playing your first club competition is less intimidating than it looks, and what catches people out has nothing to do with striking the ball. Almost all of it is procedure, and the procedure takes ten minutes to learn.

What you need before you enter

A GolfLink number and an active handicap, which comes with membership of a club affiliated to Golf Australia. Enter through the pro shop or the club’s online system, and check whether the event is scratch, handicap or both.

Read the board, then read it again

The entry sheet carries the format, the tees in play, the local rules and the closing time. Most first-timers trip over one of these: playing the wrong tees, missing the entry cut-off, or not knowing whether it is a shotgun start or normal tee times.

You keep a card, but not your own

In stroke play you mark a fellow competitor’s card and they mark yours. Enter the gross score for each hole, check it together at the end and both sign. You are responsible for the hole scores on your own card, not for the addition. A wrong hole score signed for is the one administrative error that carries a real penalty.

Pace and the etiquette that gets you welcomed back

Be on the tee five minutes early. Play ready golf where the format allows. If a ball may be lost, announce a provisional before leaving the tee. If your group falls a hole behind, either let the group through or lift the pace deliberately.

The rules you will actually need

Four situations cover almost every first competition: out of bounds or lost, which is stroke and distance; a penalty area, with relief for one shot; an unplayable ball, with three options for one shot; and free relief from cart paths, sprinklers and casual water. If in doubt in stroke play, play two balls and ask the committee afterwards.

Heat is part of the plan

A summer competition means an early tee time, more water than you think you need, a hat and sunscreen. Golfers who play their first competition in thirty degree heat without any of that discover that concentration goes long before the swing does.

Expect to play worse than usual

Nearly everybody plays three or four shots above their average in a first competition. Your handicap already assumes you are human. Score what you score, sign the card, and note that the second one feels entirely different.

Your checklist for the first one

  • GolfLink number active, entry in before the cut-off.
  • Format, tees and local rules read on the board.
  • Four rules situations understood.
  • On the tee five minutes early, provisional announced when in doubt.
  • Water, hat and sunscreen in the bag.

The golf takes care of itself. The rest is admin, and now you know it.
