Calcot Park Golf Club

Calcot Park opened in 1930 on the estate of the same name west of Reading, with a course by Harry Colt and an eighteenth-century mansion as the clubhouse. It belongs to the last generation of Colt’s English parkland work, when he had spent thirty years learning what could be done with rolling ground and mature trees, and it is a good deal better than a club of this size on the edge of a large town has any right to be.

It is regularly ranked among the best half-dozen clubs in Berkshire, which in a county that holds Sunningdale, Swinley Forest and the Berkshire is a stronger statement than it first appears.

What it asks of you

Par 70 over roughly 6,300 yards from the white tees, on ground that undulates enough that level lies are the exception. The yardage is not the defence; the greens are.

Colt sited them on natural shelves and against slopes, and several carry false fronts that reject an approach struck a fraction short. They are quick and firm through the summer, so a ball played from the wrong side of a fairway will not hold the surface. The short holes are the ones reviewers find most interesting, because Colt used the slopes rather than length to defend them.

There is water in play and the trees have grown since 1930, so the corridors are narrower than they were drawn. It is a demanding but fair test, which is the phrase that recurs in almost every account.

Visitors and societies play by arrangement and the review record is substantial. • Winter drainage is the clearest complaint. More than one account describes fairways as waterlogged after heavy rain, with the ball plugging on every shot.
• The greens divide opinion by degree rather than direction: some visitors find them quicker than is enjoyable, particularly with the false fronts.
• The course is short, and better players find it more charming than testing in calm weather.
• Traffic noise from the nearby main roads intrudes on some holes.

Getting there and when to go

Calcot is on the western edge of Reading, minutes from junction 12 of the M4 and around forty minutes from Heathrow, with Reading station on the main line from London Paddington ten minutes away.

The course plays all year, but summer and early autumn are when it is at its best; winter after heavy rain is where the reviews turn. Visitor and society booking is by arrangement.
