Bankstown Golf Club

Bankstown Golf Club was established in 1928 in south-western Sydney. The course is parkland, with a few holes along the banks of the Georges River and others through groves of native bush.

It measures 6,068 metres. Sources give the par as 71 or 72 depending on the card consulted. The course record is 66.

What it asks of you

Six thousand metres is a proper length for a metropolitan public course, and the river holes are where it is decided. Water along one side of a hole removes the safe miss, and on a flat parkland site that is the only way to make a driver a decision rather than a default.

The bush groves do a different job. They break the course into rooms, so a hole that looks open from the tee turns out to have one line into the green.

A course record of 66 on a par 71 or 72 tells you the greens hold and the course is scorable in the right hands. It is rated a Group One layout and open to all standards, which is a combination not many clubs manage.

Getting there and when to go

The club is in south-western Sydney on the Georges River, about half an hour from the city centre and twenty minutes from Sydney airport.

The course plays all year. March to November gives the best of it. Tee times are booked in advance.
