Aspotogan Ridge Golf Club

Aspotogan Ridge was built in 2018 at Hubbards, on Nova Scotia’s South Shore, to a design by Robert Leblanc, who has built most of the recent courses in Atlantic Canada. It is a nine-hole course, and the published card for a full round is a par 70 of 5,480 yards.

The design was made to show the range of Nova Scotia’s coastal landscape: woodland, wetland and the granite outcroppings that break through it.

What it asks of you

Granite is the constraint. On the South Shore the rock is close to the surface, which limits where earth can be moved and where a green can be built. Leblanc worked with the outcrops rather than removing them, so several holes are framed by rock that is genuinely in play.

Wetland does the other half of the routing. On a nine-hole course, water that cannot be crossed forces holes to run parallel, and the variety has to come from what happens at the green instead.

A par 70 over 5,480 yards for a full round means the second circuit is played from different tees. That is the honest way to build a nine that wants to be an eighteen, and it works better here than the yardage suggests.

Getting there and when to go

The course is at Hubbards on the South Shore of Nova Scotia, about forty minutes from Halifax and twenty from Chester.

The season runs roughly from May to October. June and September give the best conditions. Tee times are booked in advance.
