Dundarave Golf Course

Dundarave opened on 15 July 1999 at Brudenell, Prince Edward Island, on a design by Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry. It is owned by the province and open to the public. It is a par 72 of 7,089 yards.

The course was built to show off the Island’s red sandstone, and it has 120 bunkers filled with red sand. Draining the iron-rich clay under it was the hardest and most expensive part of the construction.

What it asks of you

A hundred and twenty bunkers is a very high number and it is the design’s whole statement. That density means the driving line on most holes is defined by sand rather than by rough, and there is nowhere to bail out without paying for it.

The red sand is not only a visual trick. Sand colour affects how a player reads depth and distance, and a bunker that does not look like a bunker is harder to avoid than one that does.

At 7,089 yards it is long, and unlike its sister course next door it has no unusual card to soften the arithmetic: it is a full-length modern resort championship course.

Getting there and when to go

The course is at Brudenell near Cardigan, in eastern Prince Edward Island, about forty-five minutes from Charlottetown.

The season runs roughly from May to October. June and September give the best conditions and the fewest people. Tee times are booked in advance.
