Golf shoes: grip, fit and a real waterproof warranty
Spiked for most of a British year, tried late in the day walking, and judged on the published warranty rather than the box.
Golf shoes are the only equipment in contact with the ground on every shot, and the only kind most golfers buy without walking in. Three things matter: grip that suits where you play, a fit that survives five miles, and waterproofing that lasts more than one season.
Spiked or spikeless
Replaceable soft spikes grip better on wet grass and on slopes, which in Britain means most of the year. Spikeless shoes are more comfortable off the course and fine on firm summer turf. If you own one pair, buy spiked; the spikeless pair is the second one, for July and August.
Waterproof means a warranty, not a word
Brands publish a waterproof warranty of one or two years on their genuine waterproof models, and that number tells you more than anything on the box. Water-resistant is a different claim and does not survive a dewy morning in unmown rough, which is the standard British test.
Fit: try them late in the day, walking
Feet swell over eighteen holes, so a shoe that fits at ten in the morning can be tight at the fifteenth. Try them late, in the socks you play in, and walk properly around the shop rather than standing still. A thumbnail of room at the toe and no heel movement at all.
Sizing is inconsistent between brands. Ignore the number and trust the walk.
Stability beats cushioning
A running shoe absorbs force going forwards. A golf shoe resists force going sideways as you turn against the ground. That is why trainers feel comfortable for nine holes and then let the foot slide through the swing. Look for a firm heel counter and a sole that does not twist easily in your hands.
Look after them and they last twice as long
Brush the sole and uppers after every round, never dry them on a radiator, and use shoe trees or newspaper. Replace soft spikes when the tips round off, usually every twenty to thirty rounds. A worn spike loses grip long before it looks worn.
