Predator Ridge Resort

Predator Ridge sits above Vernon in the north Okanagan, on dry, rocky benchland between the vineyards and the mountains. Doug Carrick was brought in to add nine holes and rework the original nine-hole Peregrine layout, producing the eighteen now called the Predator, and in 2010 he opened a second eighteen, the Ridge, on higher ground.

Between them the two courses make the largest golf resort in the interior of British Columbia, with a residential community and a practice facility to match.

What it asks of you

Semi-arid country, so the turf is firm and the ball runs a long way, and the elevation change is severe enough that the number on the card is a starting point rather than an answer.

The Predator is the harder of the two and the more links-like: rolling, open valley ground with tall fescue and dune shapes lining most of the fairways, and very little shelter from anything. The Ridge is the prettier and the more forgiving, higher up, with mountain views and a layout that gives a mid-handicapper somewhere to miss.

Both are firm and both reward a player who can control the ball on the ground. The dry Okanagan summer makes them faster than most Canadian golfers are used to.

• Wildfire smoke has affected play in the valley in recent summers, which is worth checking before travelling.

Getting there and when to go

Predator Ridge is around twenty minutes from Vernon and forty-five from Kelowna airport, in the middle of the Okanagan wine country, which is why most visitors are in the valley in the first place.

The season runs from roughly April to October. Late spring and September give the best combination of firm turf and comfortable temperatures. Accommodation is on the property and stay-and-play packages are the usual way to book.
