Fulwell Golf Club

Fulwell opened for play in November 1904, on flat ground between Hampton Hill and Twickenham, with eighteen holes laid out by J.H. Taylor, five times Open champion, a founder of the Professional Golfers’ Association, and an architect who worked at a hundred English clubs while still winning tournaments. Alister MacKenzie is also credited with work on the course.

The suburb has grown round it since, but the property is large and open enough that a round here does not feel like golf in a city, which cannot be said of many clubs inside the same radius of central London.

What it asks of you

Par 71 over 6,607 yards on ground that is close to level, so distance judgement is straightforward and the difficulty lies elsewhere. The greens are the examination, and they are the feature every reviewer names: quick, well contoured, and demanding of an approach that finishes on the correct portion.

Taylor placed his bunkering to catch the ball that is running rather than the one that is flying, which is a subtler idea than it sounds and still works on a course played with modern equipment. The trees have grown into the corridors over 120 years and narrow them more than the original drawings intended.

The wind crosses an open site with nothing to break it, which is the variable a flat parkland course would not otherwise have.

Getting there and when to go

Fulwell is on Wellington Road at Hampton Hill, ten minutes from Twickenham, twenty from Richmond and around twenty-five from Heathrow, with Fulwell station a short walk away and central London forty minutes by train.

The course plays all year on ground that drains reasonably for a London clay site. Late spring and early autumn are the best of it. Visitor and society booking is by arrangement.
