Bear Mountain

Bear Mountain sits in the Highlands above Langford, west of Victoria on Vancouver Island, on a resort property carrying two courses from Nicklaus Design: the Mountain, which opened first, and the Valley. It is the only thirty-six hole Nicklaus facility in Canada.

The ground is rock, forest and elevation. This is the Pacific coast range, and the courses were cut into it rather than laid across it, which explains both the views and what it must have cost to build them.

What it asks of you

Elevation change on a scale that does not exist elsewhere in Canadian resort golf: tee shots that drop twelve or fifteen metres, approaches played uphill into greens set against rock, and holes that change club selection by two or three from the card.

The Mountain is the harder and the more spectacular of the two, running through dense forest with views out to the mountains, the city and the Pacific. The Valley is the gentler answer: wider fairways, larger greens and fewer bunkers, and it is where most visitors should start.

Both are typical Nicklaus in their strategy, with risk and reward on most holes, and both are difficult unless you drive the ball both long and straight. The forest does not give balls back.

These are resort courses open to visitors and the review record is large. • Conditioning on the Valley Course is described as excellent, and the Mountain is generally well rated too.

• The mild climate means golf is possible here for more of the year than anywhere else in Canada.

What comes up against

• Value divides opinion sharply. A substantial share of reviewers consider the price too high for the condition on the day, while others insist the course is worth it.
• Both courses punish a wayward drive severely, and higher handicappers lose balls in the forest.
• The elevation change makes the Mountain a hard walk, and most players take a cart.
• Conditioning reports are not uniform, and the gap between the best and worst accounts is wider here than at most resorts.

Getting there and when to go

Bear Mountain is around twenty-five minutes from downtown Victoria and half an hour from Victoria International, with the ferry from Vancouver or Seattle the usual approach for visitors.

This is the mildest golfing climate in Canada, and play is possible through most of the year. Late spring and early autumn give the best combination of dry weather and firm ground; winter is playable but wet. Booking is through the resort.
