Quail Hollow Club

George Cobb laid out Quail Hollow in 1961, on wooded ground in south Charlotte. What is played today is largely someone else’s work: Tom Fazio has been the club’s architect of record since 1997, with a full rebuild that year and further changes in 2003 and 2016. Cobb’s course was long, wide and sporty; Fazio narrowed the fairways, moved tees, flashed the bunkers and put false fronts and real movement into the green complexes.

The result is a par 72 of roughly 7,550 yards with a course rating of 76.6 and a slope of 145, and a tournament record that has made it one of the best-known courses in the American South. Rory McIlroy has won here four times, including his first PGA Tour title in 2010.

What it asks of you

Driving. The course has a reputation among tour players for rewarding the best drivers of the ball rather than the trickiest short games, and that is unusual enough to be worth stating: there are few blind shots, few quirks and little that a good player would call unfair.

The closing stretch is the exception. The last three holes, known as the Green Mile, run along and over Four Mile Creek and have decided several tournaments in the final half hour. A round that has gone well for fifteen holes is not finished.

The greens are bent grass on Bermuda fairways, a combination that gives firm, fast putting surfaces in a hot climate. False fronts mean a ball landing short of the middle does not stay: the approach has to carry to the correct portion, and laying up short of a green is not the safe play it looks.

Getting there and when to go

The club is in south Charlotte, about twenty minutes from uptown and half an hour from Charlotte Douglas airport.

The season is effectively year-round in the Carolina Piedmont, but the course is at its best in April and May and again in September and October; midsummer is hot and humid. Play is by invitation of a member.
