Water, chemicals and what the drought changed
Recycled water, stormwater harvesting and warm-season grasses came out of the Millennium drought. A fawn sandbelt fairway in February is the point.
Golf uses land, water and chemicals, and in the driest inhabited continent on earth the water part is not an abstract argument. What has actually changed on Australian courses over twenty years is more interesting than either the criticism or the defence.
The Millennium drought changed the industry
Through the long drought of the 2000s, clubs across the southern states faced restrictions that made mains water for irrigation impossible. The response was structural: recycled water schemes, stormwater harvesting, bores where the aquifer allowed, and irrigation systems rebuilt to water greens and tees properly and fairways barely at all. Many metropolitan courses have not used drinking water on a fairway since.
Brown is not neglect
Firm, tan fairways run further, drain better and need less water and less fungicide. To an eye trained on television they look like a course in trouble, but the Melbourne sandbelt courses that appear in world rankings are firm and fawn-coloured by February on purpose. Members who complain about the colour are one of the real obstacles to lower water use.
The grasses did the heavy lifting
Couch and its modern cultivars need a fraction of the water that cool-season grasses do, and the conversion of fairways from bent and rye to warm-season grass is one of the quiet successes of Australian turf management. It also explains why the ball runs the way it does here and stops the way it does in Britain.
Chemicals: less, and more precisely
Spraying has moved from the calendar to targeted application based on weather and disease pressure. Greens are still treated because a lost green closes a hole for a season; fairways and rough increasingly are not. Ask your superintendent what the programme looks like now compared with ten years ago.
The land that is not in play
An eighteen-hole course has a third or more of its area out of play, and that is where the ecological value sits. Remnant bushland, native grass roughs and unmanicured wetlands support far more wildlife than a mown fairway, and several metropolitan courses are the largest remaining patches of original vegetation in their suburb. Golf Australia and the GEO Foundation both run certification along these lines.
What a player can do
Repair your pitch mark. Keep buggies off wet ground and observe cart-path-only days, because compaction is the reason for half the coring people complain about. And do not grumble at a brown fairway in February.
The honest limits
A golf course is not a nature reserve, and a resort course watered in a dry inland town does not become sustainable because it recycles. The useful question is not whether golf is good for the environment but whether a given course is better managed this year than last.
Worth asking at your club
- Where does the irrigation water come from, and how much is recycled?
- What proportion of the property is out of play and managed as bushland?
- Is the course certified through Golf Australia or GEO?
