Water, chemicals and what courses actually changed

Irrigation is golf's biggest environmental cost and the one superintendents worked hardest on. Brown fairways in August are a choice, not neglect.

Golf uses land, water and chemicals, and the industry has spent twenty years being told so. What has actually changed on the ground is more interesting than either the criticism or the defence, and most of it is visible on the courses you already play.

Where the water goes

Irrigation is the single largest environmental cost of a golf course, and it is also the one superintendents have worked hardest on. The visible signs are fairways that go brown at the edges in August, rough left unwatered, and irrigation heads that no longer run in a full circle. A course that is green from fence to fence in a dry summer is a course spending water on ground nobody plays from.

The USGA has funded turfgrass research on water use for decades, and the practical result is drought-tolerant grasses and irrigation controlled zone by zone rather than hole by hole.

Brown is not neglect

Firm, tan fairways run further, drain better and need less water and less fungicide. They also look, to an eye trained on television, like a course in trouble. Members who complain about the color are one of the real obstacles to reduced water use, and the courses that have got past it tend to be the ones where the superintendent explains what is happening before the complaints start.

Chemicals: less, and more precisely

Fungicide and herbicide use has moved from calendar spraying to targeted application based on weather models and disease pressure. Greens still get treated because a lost green closes a hole for a season, but fairways and rough increasingly do not. Ask your superintendent what the annual spray programme looks like now compared with ten years ago; most are pleased to be asked.

The land that is not in play

A typical eighteen-hole course has a third or more of its area out of play, and what happens there is where most of the ecological value sits. Native rough, wooded corridors, ponds left unmanicured and unmown edges support far more wildlife than a mown fairway ever will. The Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf certifies courses in the United States on exactly this basis, and the GEO Foundation runs an international equivalent.

What a player can actually do

Very little of this is in your hands, but not none of it. Repairing your pitch mark keeps a green healthy without chemicals. Keeping carts off wet ground reduces compaction, which is the reason for half the aeration you complain about. And not complaining about brown fairways in August is a genuine contribution.

The honest limits

A golf course is not a nature reserve, and a course built on drained wetland or irrigated desert does not become sustainable because it recycles its water. The useful question is not whether golf is good for the environment but whether a given course is better managed this year than last, and that question has a real answer.

Worth asking at your club

  • Where does the irrigation water come from, and has usage fallen?
  • What proportion of the property is out of play and unmanaged?
  • Is the course certified by Audubon, GEO or a state programme?

The answers tell you more about how a club is run than any brochure, and the clubs doing the work are usually delighted that somebody asked.
